Series: The Socal Construction of Whiteness

Liberal Arts Talk

We invite you to join the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Global & Environmental Studies Program for an opening discussion of whiteness from a transdisciplinary perspective. We will begin by unpacking the social construction of whiteness and reflect on our lived experiences within this construct. Stuart Parker (Behavioral Sciences) and Amy Karp (English) and Dominic Wetzel (Behavioral Sciences) will join Liberal Arts Program Coordinators Red Washburn and Jason Leggett to consider the impact of whiteness across our institution and in our different roles.
We believe this day is for everyone no matter your political beliefs and we invite you to voice your opinion.

December 7th, 2 – 3 PM. Zoom info:

Guiding Questions for a Panel Discussion, December 7th, 2 – 3 PM.

  1. What does it mean to be a white person within a majority non-white institution?
  2. How do we construct ongoing dialogue around the finding that Kingsborough ranks the lowest among CUNY colleges for faculty retention and promotion of people of color?
  3. What does a white ally do and how does one behave especially in the era of dual pandemics and economic austerity?
  4. How do we construct safe spaces for the work to close equity gaps among faculty and with students in our classrooms?
